1200 it WAY to many. If something was to go wrong, imagine how it would be with you having 1200 clients complaining. Just my .02

depends on the website you host. if they only have html sites, you can even let 1000 sites more :p

but if they're using php and stuff, you may want to watch your recources. as they will go really low sometimes.

Okay, first of all, you shouldn't put that many sites on your computer. If your computer crashes, its going to take a long time to get back all of those websites. Since youre running that kind of computer, its going to be a risk of having that many sites, unless you upgrade it. You can also get a hardrive storage chip so you can store your sites, as backups(in case your hardrive crashes) and to mabye free up some memory. My best guess, a regular site usually takes up about 10-150mb of hardrive space, which means that you need to watch out if you don't want to lose a ton of websites.
Best Of Luck!

Right now our Dual Xeon 2.8 runs with 3500 accounts on it with a load average of about 1. I plan on putting no more then 8000 - 10000 per server. Space is the biggest concern not bandwidth or CPU at the moment.

They're not as important as paid clients, since they're not paying you anything. If you plan it out well with how much you give out and how much you have, it shouldn't be an issue.
